Object talk is a teaching method used by educators to develop speaking skills in children. Object talk is introduced in schools right from Kindergarten (KG).
What is Object Talk?
It involves using a physical object or a visual aid that serves as the topic of the discussion and the child has to speak a few sentences about that object.

For example, for the Object Talk, the teachers might ask all the children to pick up any object with a specific colour.
So, if its “yellow day”, the child can talk about a banana, or a cap, or a yellow toy train, or a compass box, or any object that is yellow in colour.
For the next object talk, the teachers may ask the children to pick up objects of a different colour.
How does it help?
Most schools now have “Object talk” sessions regularly, and that too from an early age.
When a child picks up an object that he/she is already familiar with, they already know a lot of things about that object and this talk provides them with an opportunity to express themselves better.
It is a great way to get the smaller kids to learn to speak multiple sentences.
Besides helping learn about new things, this method also makes the children more confident while speaking in front of an audience.
While most parents worry a lot about the topic and what has to be spoken, what is more important is that the child gets an opportunity to talk in public; the exposure is more important.
So parents should make sure that their child always participates in ‘object talk’ in school.
Preparing for Object Talk
Object Talk usually lasts for a couple of minutes for primary school students, wherein the child is expected to talk a few sentences about any object.
There are plenty of topics on which students can talk – plastic, robots, dinosaurs, baby blades, flowers, etc.
For example, in the case of dinosaurs, your child can say that “Dinosaurs lived millions of years ago before they went extinct. They were fascinating creatures that roamed on earth. I have plenty of dinosaurs toys (and tell the names of various types of dinosaurs). I also like to see movies that are made on dinosaurs.”
You can build on that, and that should easily take a child 1-2 min to talk, which is sufficient for object talk.
When doing the object talk, make sure you ask your child to begin by introducing himself/herself and introducing the object, before moving on to the details of the object.
