Most parents feel that’s because parents in India try to make up for lack of attention paid by teachers in crowded classrooms.
While that may be one reason, experts believe another reason is that Indian parents are over-possessive. They do not want their children to take risk or make mistakes. Asian countries culturally value school education more, but it is also because Indian education system rely’s on rote learning rather than based on thought.
The problem with homework is that:
- Homework eats up free time, a common grouse. As the student goes in higher class, it can be difficult to manage homework with independent study.
- Excess homework causes children to feel ‘burnt out’: After a busy day at school (and extracurricular activities), homework feels like a monumental task, causing some children to feel burnt out (much before they reach the final years of school). In some cases, homework is assigned over term breaks or summer holidays as well, which further causes stress in some children.
- The volume of homework is so much that your child may not be able to dedicate as much time to each task (as would be ideal).
