About Abacus

An Abacus is a tool or a toy for counting. Abacus has been a tool of choice for math calculation in Asian countries for hundreds of years. It has survived generations because it is effective and works. Experts in Abacus feel that it is faster than using a calculator.

In recent times, educators has been using it as a tool to develop the brain.

While other students struggle with tedious math calculations on paper, students who train in Abacus are good at mentally calculating and finishing homework, tests, and assignments early.

Abacus mental math training has the longest records of success for early math mastery. It is easy to learn, cost effective, and research proves it enhances many different areas of the brain.

Abacus for Learning Math

An abacus comes with several rods is commonly used for teaching basic math to kids.

An abacus with two rods has a tens rod and a ones rod, Each rod can have a maximum of nine beads.

Example 1 : Take the number 45.
45 = 4 beads on tens rod and 5 beads on ones rod.
This is because 45 = 4 tens and 5 ones.

Example 2 : Take the number 543.
543 = 5 beads on hundreds rod and 4 beads on tens rod and 3 beads on ones rod.
This is because 543 = 5 hundreds and 4 tens and 3 ones.

Here’ an Abacus activity for Kids. You will need ice cream sticks, colourful clay, and glue (fevicol) to do this activity. You have to make the given number (in this case 27,510) on a chart using sticks that denote the rods of Abacus. So you will need 5 sticks to denote Ones (O), Tens (T), Hundreds (H), Thousands (Th), Ten Thousands (TTh).

So in order to make 27,510, you will not use any bead (clay) on the Ones rod; you will use only one bead (clay) on the Tens rod, you will use five beads (clay) on the Hundreds rod, you will use seven beads (clay) on the Thousands rod and finally you will use 2 beads (clay) on the Ten Thousands rod.
