What is Digital Learning?

Digital learning is any type of learning that uses technology as an aid to improve learning and make it more effective. It can involve practices such as blended and virtual learning.

Digital learning is a broad term and it has only become popular in the last few years. It’s often used as a synonym for electronic learning (also known as eLearning) and is commonly used to refer to methods that are opposite of the traditional teacher-pupil-style of learning.

There are many who think Digital Learning is the same as online learning, but that’s not completely true.

In fact, online learning is a part of digital learning and digital learning can include any or a combination of the following:

• Badging and gamification
• Blended learning
• Classroom technologies
• e-textbooks
• Learning analytics
• Learning objects
• Mobile learning e.g. Mobile Phones, Laptops, Computers, iPads.

• Augmented reality (AR)

Another misconception is that Digital learning will replace traditional methods altogether. That is not true!

The purpose of incorporating digital learning is to enhance the overall learning experience and make it more effective.

Digital learning makes use of a broad range of technology-enhanced educational strategies including blended learning, flipped learning, personalized learning, and other strategies that depend on digital tools (to a small or large degree).

Also, digital learning is not just about using digital tools in the classroom and to simply continue learning via digital means. The real purpose of digital learning is to enhance learning and make it more effective.
