Robot to teach in Mumbai institute
Humanoid robot ‘Mitra’, which welcomed PM Modi and Ivanka Trump at an event last year, will co-teach students at The Indian School of Management and Entrepreneurship (ISME) in Lower Parel from the next academic year starting July.
“This will be done in phases. In the first phase, we will use it for admission counselling, responding to FAQs and handling enrolment formalities. In the second phase, we will program it for delivering lectures, explaining concepts and answering students’ questions. Since this is based on artificial intelligence (AI), the robot will learn with each step. The more they interact, the more they learn,” said Imran Kapadia, chief digital officer at the institute.
“The future of education is in AI (artificial intelligence), AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality). That’s why we ordered the bot,” said Dr Indu Shahani, president and chairperson, ISME and Indian School of Design and innovation (ISDI). ISME has two other smaller robots programmed to teach yoga to students. “They do not speak or learn, but do activities which are pre-fed,” Kapadia said.
Mitra is an indigenous robot, built by Bengaluru-based Invento Robotics. The fivefoot high humanoid has a fibre glass body and a touchscreen on its chest. It comes with facial recognition technology and understands different languages. The company sells different versions of the robot, customized for different sectors.
Mitra made headlines when it welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump’s daughter and White House advisor Ivanka Trump at an event last year.
