The organisation you choose should be involved in the supply of legal services.

The purpose of these assignments is to conduct a detailed strategic analysis of a real world organisation and present your findings. Context is an important part of understanding the logic behind an organisation’s strategy processes, strategic choices and the way they implement strategy.

By applying the theories and concepts we will cover in the module to an actual organisation you will discover their effectiveness and also their limitations. If you have worked with a group already, the organisation you choose MUST be different from those covered by the group you worked with or any of the other groups who presented in your workshop.

For your chosen organisation you will need to identify the strategy or strategies you consider it is following (this is likely to be complex and include different levels).

To cover this element of the assignment you will need to consider some of the choices the organisation appears to have made and the pattern of its decisions over time in terms of how it competes (e.g. does it compete on price, cost, some form of differentiation or in a novel manner such as following a Blue Ocean Strategy or seeking Adaptive Advantage), the scope of its activities (for example, the extent of its vertical and horizontal scope, products, markets, geography and/or innovation etc.), plus the strategic methods it employs – whether it uses organic approaches, alliances or networks, or acquisitions/mergers or disposals etc.

You will then need to consider how well these strategies perform using an effective evaluation framework. This is likely to include analysis of the organisation’s position in terms of evaluating fit with the environment it operates in, plus the organisation’s capabilities, position and culture, when considering advantage and some strong evidence of the performance of the strategy over time – perhaps through financial analysis.
