The Nehru Planetarium, commissioned on 3rd March, 1977, with the objective of fostering scientific temper through the means of edutainment (that’s right! education + entertainment). The planetarium has been making learning Astronomy a pleasant experience. It also has grown into a Center for scientific study of astronomy and for meeting of scientists and scholars for discussions and lectures, arranged periodically on various stellar and Astronomical events.

Star Gazing Workshop at Planetarium
Star Gazing Workshop at Planetarium where schoolchildren learn the secrets of our solar system
Nehru Planetarium at Worli in Mumbai is one of the best places to teach little ones about the Sun, Moon, Stars and our Solar system. Star Gazing Workshops are a regular at Nehru Planetarium, so make sure you take your child for one of these sessions. Star Gazing Workshops are great for school children.
More than 70 students, accompanied by their parents, recently turned up at the Nehru Planetarium for the ‘star-gazing workshop’ organized for children, meant to satisfy their curiosity about astronomy. Considering the expanse of the universe, sky-gazing could be a daunting task, but the host managed to encapsulate it during the two-hour workshop.
The event started with an interactive session with the planetarium director and the host for the evening. Children and their parents came up with a variety of questions for the director. “It is fun to answer their questions as I find some of them very interesting. You never know what they will come up with. You need to be very patient,” said the planetarium director.
Since the sky was bright and clear, the workshop began with watching the moon through telescope. There were two telescopes, refracting and reflecting, that were used during the workshop for the children to view the sky.
“The sky needs to be little darker for one to spot stars. We learn a lot about the solar system in our school textbooks, but it is exciting to see the moon through the telescope. It was a fun learning experience,” said a 15-year-old.
“I have never seen the moon so clearly. I learnt a lot about astronomy in the workshop,” said Neha. Five-year-old Afaan Khan also enjoyed watching the celestial bodies through the telescope. “I got answers for many of my questions that go unanswered in the school’s classroom,” said Arav.
“Since there was dust in the atmosphere, not all stars were visible clearly. But we allowed the children to see a couple of stars and the moon. It was a highly satisfying experience,” said the planetarium director, who was assisted by an amateur astronomer colleague.
Most school children said that they would definitely come back again to the planetarium if a similar star gazing workshop was organized again.
