Born and raised in Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu), Kalam studied physics and aerospace engineering. Later, he spent several decades working as a scientist and scientific administrator, mainly at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and was later involved in India’s civilian space program and military missile development efforts. This is why he came to be known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development of ballistic missile technology and its launch.
He continued giving lectures and speeches at many educational institutions till he died. He had once stated during an interview that he would like to die while teaching his students abstract that was exactly how he went.

On his 79th birthday, the United Nations recognized and declared it as World Students Day which is probably a great honor accorded to any Indian.
