Most Students Struggle to Write a Good Conclusion
Many students find it difficult to write a good conclusion. By the time they reach the conclusion part, they have already done so much work on the body of the essay that they just want to finish off the essay as quickly as possible, and so they write a rushed and badly written conclusion.
While that is true in some cases, for most other students, the fact is that they have not been taught how to write a proper conclusion.
Here’s an example of a conclusion for a school project (class IX).
“Here, I have come to the end of the project on the topic Atomic structure. I tried my best to include all the necessary points that are required related to the given topic. Some of the information I wrote in the project were taken from the internet and I have also referred to some books. This project contains information of atomic structure, subatomic particles, and their discoveries, electronic configuration atomic theory, models, etc. I do hope that my project will be interesting and may be even knowledgeable.”
Here’s another one:
“It was a wonderful and learning experience for me while working on this project. The joy of working and the thrill involved while tackling the various problems and challenges gave me a feel of the industry. I enjoyed each and every bit of work I had put into this project.”
While these are decent attempts considering that this could be the student’s first project, the fact is that s/he has not been taught how to write a good conclusion.
Here’s a somewhat better version of a school project conclusion.
“The project took me through various phases of India’s freedom struggle and gave me a better understanding of the history of India. Freedom fighters of India were the real fighters, and great martyrs who helped free India. We have to salute them and respect them for the sacrifices they made to give India its freedom”.
For students pursuing their under-graduation or post-graduation, writing the Conclusion is going to require some consideration; one needs to carefully collate the important findings and present it in a concise manner, with adequate recommendations (if it applies).
The teacher/professor may read the introduction and the conclusion first to quickly understand how well you have tackled the subject, before moving on to reading the body.

Lot of students, especially school students find it challenging to write the conclusion as they are not sure how to summarize the entire thing in a few lines.
So here are some guidelines.
Many teachers suggest using the following three parts to write a conclusion:
- Restate the main premise or the main objectives
- Write one or two general sentences which accurately summarises the main body/arguments which support the main premise/theme of the work
- End it with a general statement of how the community stands to benefit from following the premise that you put forward in the main body of the work (you may even provide a general warning of the consequences of not following the premise).
A generic structure that you may find useful is:
- Brief recap of what you have covered in relation to the essay title
- Reference to the larger issue and Evaluation of the main arguments
- Highlighting the most important aspects in the essay/academic writing.
Please Note: You should not present any new arguments in your conclusion.
Other suggestions for writing a conclusion include: Cover three things in the conclusion, what was the aim of the academic writing work, what were the main findings, and what are the recommendation.
Here’s an example.
In conclusion, the sole purpose of organizations should not be only to make profits. They should care about the community as well as the environment, because after all, they use the resources of the community to make their profits. Companies that do not care, act responsibly, or are not ethically driven, are less likely to survive in the long run.
Ordering sentences in a conclusion
Here’s another example, and in this case you have to make the correct conclusion from the sentences, which are provided. You don’t have to write anything new, just rearrange the sentences to form the conclusion.
The main premise of this essay is that the government should spend more money on childcare places for the children of parents who study or work.
a. If we fail to meet our obligations in this area, we will be jeopardizing our future well-being and achieve only short-term financial savings.
b. In conclusion, it is essential that we support the nation’s parents and children by funding more childcare places.
c. Only in this way can we provide the valuable learning environments that young Americans need while, at the same time, utilising the skills of all productive members of our society.
d. The entire national community will then be enriched economically, socially and culturally.
So go ahead and rearrange those 4 sentences – a,b,c,d to form the conclusion.
Did you get it right?
Here’s the correct conclusion:
In conclusion, it is essential that we support the nation’s parents and children by funding more childcare places. Only in this way can we provide the valuable learning environments that young Americans need while, at the same time, utilising the skills of all productive members of our society. The entire national community will then be enriched economically, socially and culturally. If we fail to meet our obligations in this area, we will be jeopardizing our future well-being and achieve only short-term financial savings.
That’s all to it really.
So you restate the objectives, summarize the main points, and suggest if things are going in that direction or not. You can usually do all of this in one paragraph, but you may break it into a few paragraphs for lengthier works.
