Math Word Problems
Math word problems and how to easily solve them.
My eldest son would often struggle with math if it wasn’t written in a nice neat equation. I would often sit with him to solve a math problem and provide him a few regenerations of the same problem with different numbers which he had to do on his own. After a few weeks of this, he was able to solve the word problems without any help. Most kids think “It’s too hard” fairly quickly so confidence-building is important.
There are two steps to solving math word problems:
- Convert the wording into a numeric equation that combines smaller “expressions”
- Solve the equation
Suggestions:
Read the complete problem
Identify variables and attach units of measure to the variables (kms, inches, etc.)
Draw and label all graphs and pictures clearly
Explain each step of your process

Best Danica McKellar Math Books for Girls
Danica McKellar is a television actor (remembered as the love interest in The Wonder Years). But she also has a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in mathematics. Besides her acting work, Danica has written several math books (its tone is entertaining), specifically for young girls (to get them interested in math). Most of her math books are aimed at middle school and high school girls.
This series of math books can be used for supplemental teaching in classrooms, as well as home schooling.
Math Doesn’t Suck: How to Survive Middle School Math Without Losing Your Mind or Breaking a Nail
This Math Doesn’t Suck contains chapters on fractions, percent, decimals, word problems and common math concepts found in middle school. While some don’t like the glitzy side bars and girly orientation used to teach the math principles, it does teach math.
Kiss My Math: Showing Pre-Algebra Who’s Boss
This book gives the basics of pre-algebra to provide the reader with the knowledge to negotiate algebra. The chapters include, adding and subtracting integers, positive and negative, variables, combining like terms, solving and graphing equations and more.
Hot X: Algebra Exposed
This, like the other books in the series, is a supplement to homework. It is the next step up from Showing Pre-Algebra Who’s Boss and ventures into algebra. This book explains algebra in terms a young girl can understand.
Girls Get Curves: Geometry Takes Shape
Geometry is all about shapes, so, in that sense, the title makes sense. Chapters of this book devoted to geometry include basics, proofs, parallel lines, polygons, circles and other geometry concepts. Includes glossary and answer key.
