The MUN aims to enhance student’s public speaking, debating, writing, research, critical thinking, and leadership abilities. The theme for this MUN was ‘The Road to Peace’ wherein students debated on topics including countering the issue of global gender-based violence, eliminating fear of chemical weapons with special reference to Syria and surveillance on anti-dumping duties imposed by member countries with special reference to the US-China trade war.
Riya Gada, a third year law student, who played the part of a delegate from European Union of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) committee, says, “The aim of participating in this MUN was to enhance my leadership skills and diplomatic qualities and develop my convincing power. As I was playing the part of a delegate from WTO, I learnt a lot about international trade and various trade related issues.
Vivek Gala, a class XII student says, “I participated in this MUN programme to understand the dynamic global issues and their possible solutions. “I also utilised this opportunity to work on my oratory and crisis resolving skills. This MUN has helped me understand the nature of chemical warfare and the situation in Syria,” he adds.
Since research is a critical part of preparation for MUN, the students learnt about various aspects of war and how the international community react to such crisis situations.
“Understanding the outcomes and adversities caused by war as a part of my research as well as from the debate has provided me with a sense of purpose and will to help people. The preparation process is more rewarding than the debate itself. A vast amount of data has to be analysed and processed to prepare a few strong points and speeches. This provides us with an opportunity to enhance our research, analysis, and oratory skills as well,” he said.
