Maybe you can borrow some ideas from this clever Thai mom, who came up with this brilliant, unconventional idea to teach his stubborn child (who refused to go to school) a valuable lesson about life.
In a series of posts on Facebook, the clever mum Nuttanitcha Chotsirimeteekul recounts how she and her husband went around the city with their child, making him pick up other people’s trash for a profit.
Walking about 2.2km along the streets of Bangkok, they tasked their preschooler to pick up plastic and glass bottles, which he then had to sell. After a long day of scavenging, the child was able to collect bottles that amounted to two baht (around 2 rupees) for 2kg.
Once they were done, the boy asked if they could take the bus. The mom tells him that it costs 31 cents to take the bus and he didn’t have enough money, and he will have to find more bottles to earn more money. The exhausted boy says he’s fine with walking.
The boy also asks for an ice-cream, and the other mother reminds him that it costs 10 cents, “do we have it?”, and the boy says he doesn’t want it anymore.
“Education is a great opportunity for children. You may have learned the value of money today, but you can learn even more valuable lessons at school,” said the mom to the child.
Post his experience, in another video, the boy says “I want to go to school” (when asked if he would like to work or go to school).
Facebook users lauded the parents for their creative teaching methods. Some commented that they should be proud of their son for respecting authority, while others questioned the harshness of their methods.
Sometimes, a lesson taught through experiences is more effective than mere words. While it okay to be firm with your child to help them learn to become better people, it has to be paired with love and reassurance (the Thai mum who worked hard alongside her son, as he struggled to learn his lesson).
