Let’s take a look at a few examples:
- One chocolate
- Pair of cats
- Three ducks
- A Ppair of shells
In the above examples, 1 is an odd number, 2 is an even number, 3 is an odd number, 4 is an even number. So basically, if a number can be divided into pairs, it is called an even number.
An even number can be divided evenly by two. For example, the number 8 can be divided into two groups of four.
However, an odd number cannot be divided evenly into two groups (it will have a remainder of one). For example, the number eleven can be divided into two groups of five with a remainder of one.
So when you are teaching odd and even numbers to kids for the first time, just try out this simple method – just give them a few numbers and ask them to make pairs of dots.
All those numbers for which the child is able to make pairs is an even number. But if for any number, the child is unable to make a complete pair (one is missing) then that is an odd number.
