A PTA (parent-teacher association) is the point of contact between a school and the parents, and is usually chosen by the parents. The main role of the local PTA is to build strong working relationships among parents, teachers and schools, in support of students. Most schools in Mumbai (and in other cities in India) now have a PTA for every class.
Criteria for Becoming PTA
While there are no specific rules, there are general guidelines provided by the government. Even otherwise, most parents have their own logic for selecting / rejecting candidates.

Here are some observations:
- In some schools, a PTA cannot become a PTA again at least for 3 years
- Some schools list years of experience of candidates (which actually is not required, because you should not rule out home-makers)
- Some give importance to English proficiency, as they feel, the PTA will be able to communicate better with the Principal / management (Hindi should also be fine).
- PTA’s should be able to devote time to their role. If you already have a job and are very busy, think twice before committing yourself.
- They want PTA who can fight for the parents, which is bang on. You need PTA’s who can put the point forward and take the lead. You need someone who will give you results at the end of the day…and not do only loose talks.
- You want a PTA who can argue, co-ordinate between parents and management, and more importantly get parent’s issues resolved amicably
Once elected, the Principal talks about Norms and guidelines with the PTA, so that s/he understands the rules well.
Government Guidelines for PTA
Did you know that Maharashtra state government has issued guidelines for the formation of Parent-Teachers Associations (PTA) in private, aided and unaided schools on Tuesday? This government resolution (GR) will be applicable to schools affiliated to all boards.
Some of the important points mentioned were:
- PTA are compulsory in all schools.
- PTA has to approve all fee revisions.
However, it does not mention democratic methods to elect the representatives of the PTA.
While I am in no way against parent volunteer efforts, and its absolutely necessary for a school to be successful and offer the best education. At times, it feels that the current model has its limitations, and prevents (or doesn’t provide enough opportunities) for other parents to contribute their time, efforts and talents.
So what do you feel about the PTA in your school? Please let us know in the comments.
