Improving vocabulary helps kids become effective communicators, and improves their reading and writing skills. A strong vocabulary enables a child to better express their thoughts and ideas, to understand texts more easily, and to build knowledge across many different subjects.
Ways to Improve Vocabulary
There are several fun and engaging ways for young children to improve their vocabulary. Irrespective of the method used, the key to improving vocabulary is exposure and repetition. Encourage your child to use new words in context and make it a fun and enjoyable experience.
Here are a few suggestions on how to improve your child’s vocabulary:
Read to your child every day and encourage them to read on their own. Choose books with interesting and varied vocabulary to help expand their word knowledge.
Play word games with your child, such as Scrabble Junior, Boggle Junior, or Hangman. This can help them learn new words and reinforce spelling skills.
Have conversations with your child about a variety of topics. Use words that might be new to them and explain their meanings. This can help them expand their vocabulary and also improve their listening and comprehension skills.
Use flashcards or picture cards to teach new words. You can create your own or find them online. Make it a game by asking your child to guess the word based on the picture or definition.
