The very motto of Diwali as inscribed in the Vedic scriptures which makes it truly secular is that it can be celebrated by any, every and no faith.
Southern India honors this day as the day Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura along with his wife Sathyabhama. In western India the celebration is in the honor of the day King Bali who gave away his kingdom went to rule the nether-world as ordered by Vishnu. For Jains, Lord Mahavira attained eternal bliss of Nirvana. For Sikhs, their sixth guru was freed from captivity of the Mughar Emperor Jahangir. Buddhists honour as on the day Ashoka took to non-violence.
The festival not only strengthens the roots of unity among the people, but also increases friendliness and feelings of love and compassion for one’s fellow human beings.
Eco-Friendly Diwali
More students are now celebrating eco-friendly Diwali. Students from several schools are taking a pledge to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali.
Several initiatives were taken, from street plays to money donation in order to educate students about the ill-effects of fire crackers on the environment. And their efforts seem to have paid of, as very few fire-crackers were burst by students this Diwali.
“In the last two to three years, students have contributed phenomenally in many ways. While some still continue to burst crackers, the number is gradually going down which is a great sign,” said an activist.
