New schools and colleges making Mumbai an educational hub

From schools to colleges, Mumbai is gradually becoming an educational hub, and is creating a new world for the leaders of tomorrow.

Efforts to improve literacy and other forms of education in India have in recent years entailed policy reforms that are aimed at de-regulating the provision of primary and secondary education. This has made Maharashtra show a keen interest in promoting education at all levels.

Also, with Mumbai expanding geographically (Navi Mumbai, Karjat), the region is attracting several new schools and colleges.

School Education

Education in India is provided by the public sector as well as the private sector, with control and funding coming from three levels: central, state and local bodies.

Under various articles of the Indian constitution, free and compulsory education is provided as a fundamental right to children between the ages of 6 and 14. The ratio of public schools to private schools in India is around 7:5.

India’s improved education system is often cited as one of the main contributors to its economic development. Along with public schools, there are private schools, with guidelines to encourage them to reach out to students from diverse backgrounds and a focus on an all-round education. There are also numerous central and state government-run schools and schools run by minority trusts and foundations.

The IT sector and other job opportunities, coupled with housing and infrastructure options commensurate to modern-day aspirations, have seen large number of people move to Maharashtra (Mumbai & Pune) from different parts of India.

The international expat community is also mostly centered in this part of the country. To cater to the needs of a growing population, a number of people are stepping into the schooling space, with differentiated offerings to cater to the needs of the modern-day parent.

Of late, the region is also playing host to a clutch of new-age institutions, many of them offering global affiliations such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) and the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) curriculum.

Higher Education

Cities like Mumbai & Pune have always been famous for boarders hailing from different parts of the country. But with time, there has been a considerable increase in the number of new institutions for higher education as well. Innumerable institutes have been setup for students who seek admissions for their bachelors in different courses.

Setting up of countless new institutes, providing many courses like B.Tech, M.Tech, MBA, Law, and usual graduation courses is contributing to bring in more student population into the area.

Students from other parts of India are finding Mumbai’s environment precise for study purposes. “I am from Aurangabad. as there are no good colleges in my own town for vocational courses, I preferred Mumbai because the opportunities I will got here after my post-graduation are immense,” says Sameer, a student in Mumbai.

Cities like Mumbai have all the conveniences that are required by students from outside the city. The facilities at hostel are good, food provided is good, and people are also helpful.

With many PGs and hostels in the area, students now find it easier to get accommodation anywhere between Rs.3000 to Rs.5000 per month, which also includes food. The hostel charges are very nominal and living in the heart of the city helps students avail market facilities even at odd hours, when they’re in need of things.
