What is an Interjection (Examples)

In English Grammar, an interjection is a part of speech that helps to show emotion. It expresses meaning or feeling. they may be followed by wither a comma (,) or exclamation mark (!).

For Example

Ouch! that hurts!

Oh, what a wonderful movie!

Sometimes these interjections can also be a complete sentence.

For Example

Hi!

Wow!

Why are Interjections Used?

Interjections are used to express strong emotions, such as love, hate, surprise, happiness, anger, enthusiasm, boredom, confusion or unhappiness.

Use of Interjections
Interjections are commonly used at the beginning of the sentence.

For Example

“Hurrah! We have finally won the match.”

“Oh no, I can’t believe this!”

But sometimes interjections appear in the middle, at the end, or any place to put in a bit of feeling ad emotion for added impact.

“So, it’s raining again, huh?”

• HURRAH (hooray, hooray, and hurray) is an exclamation of triumph or happiness.
• OUCH signals pain or is a response to a harsh word or action.
• UGH is an exclamation of disgust.
• WOW expresses surprise.
• YUCK shows irritation.
